The traveling healer Bradul has only one ambition for his only child Mina, that she marries a good man and builds a happy family with him. However, when she catches the attention of the abusive Prince Tovlan, Bradul asks Monchail, a grotesque old man they have befriended, to help her escape. Monchail, who is actually an eagle in human form, takes her to the northern border of the country. Yet soon Mina finds herself crossing path with Tovlan once more when he sends an army out to the ore-rich land to take it by force.
